little red rosie hood

Rosie's red hooded sweatshirt just kills me. Especially every time Anne says "come on, Rosie, let's get your hoodie on."

down river picnic

The down river picnic is an all-day event that involves skiing down the Tanana River to Fish Wheel Bluff for hot drinks and a bonfire, followed by a potluck.  Great company, kids, dogs, sunshine, spring thaw, delicious food = good fun.

Take it easy, Greasy, you ain't got far to slide.

Ice slides at the Ice Park. Probably the biggest attraction. I had to pass this year. Bumpy ride + sprained ankle. But it was fun to watch!

ice jaws

It turns out I don't take a bloggable photo every day - go figure.  But, we did go to the Ice Park for the World Ice Championships (held here in Fairbanks every year), so I have a few photos for a few days.  Color is a real challenge in these photos, the sculptures are lit up with all sorts of funny colors at night, but it makes all the detail in the ice stand out.... This is my favorite - a reminder that sometimes you have to zoom in - see the trees through the forest?  The detail in some of the sculptures is unbelievable.  I have no idea how they do that - I know there's an armada of ice carving tools and hours of cold, collld carving involved.

jumpin cat flash

Gus is an amazing jumper. One of his favorite games is catching this fish in his paws, and then putting it in his mouth, mid-air. Hours of entertainment!

Seagull drafting off of the ferry from Montezuma to the mainland, Jan 1.

I keep leaning toward posting Costa Rica photos, probably because I have not posted any yet.  The trip was really wonderful, but truthfully pretty exhausting.  Traveling at Christmas, and from Alaska to anywhere, is a hassle.  It's also disorienting to leave the cold, dark Fairbanks winter and land in a warm, sunny, colorful jungle, then return back to cold, dark winter.  It makes both seem rather unreal, and really makes us question why we live in this crazy place.  I guess that question comes up every January, even if we stay put. But a couple of months later, Alaska is all magic and beauty again.
